Backpack the Rainbow Lakes Wilderness
        Oct, 2024    $200

The Rainbow Lake Wilderness is a 7,135-acre wilderness area located within the Chequamegon National Forest in northern Wisconsin. Just over six miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail cross this Wilderness from northwest to southeast, passing close to Rainbow Lake itself.  Rolling terrain covered in northern hardwoods, balsam fir, pine, and paper birch provide habitat for many wildlife species. Hiking is relatively easy. Bald eagles, owls, loons, woodpeckers, and songbirds thrive, and waterfowl are often seen on Reynard and Wishbone Lakes. Thousands of migrating birds stop for a rest in spring and fall. There are 16 lakes and nine small ponds.

This backpacking adventure starts at the Old Growth Forest in Drummond, Wisconsin; traverses northwest along small kettle lakes through the Rainbow Lakes Wilderness; and concludes at W Delta Road. It offers old-growth, scenic lakes, backcountry camping, and a fire tower lookout.

The adventure includes camping at the Drummond Lake campground on Friday night, backcountry camping in the Rainbow Lakes Wilderness on Saturday night, and 13 miles of backpacking across rolling, forested terrain. This trip requires 4-6 hours of backpacking each day. Camping is at backcountry sites with no bathrooms or facilities. You do not need any prior experience for this adventure, and you do not need your own gear unless you have an expedition (60 liters or larger) backpack. Have fun, feel safe, be empowered, build confidence, and learn new skills. Over the weekend, you will learn the history and ecology of the Northwoods, campsite set-up, wilderness travel, backpack techniques, fire building, outdoor cooking, water filtration, safety skills, and more. Daily reflection, conversation, and debriefing will help participants transfer skills learned, and experiences gained, to their daily life.

Filterable water is available from numerous small streams and lakes.
